York is to get a new fashion store.
Clothing brand Toast is to open a store on Stonegate.
The company has applied to City of York Council for planning permission to put up signs outside the Grade II-listed unit at 25 Stonegate in the former Origins store.
Planning documents say the store will keep its black-painted exterior and there will be no changes made inside the building.
It sells womenswear and homeware. The York shop will be the retailer’s 16th, and its second in the North – the other is in Harrogate.
Historic building
A statement says: “The historic fabric of the building is being retained and the proposed new signage to the shopfront will not affect the overall appearance of the building.
“From 1898 to 1902, George Walton, designer and collaborator in Glasgow with Charles Rennie Mackintosh, worked from premises at 21 Stonegate.”
According to the retailer’s website:
-
Toast York is spread across two floors of this Tudor building located in the historic centre of York. Womenswear is on the ground floor, while House & Home is on the top floor.
The building has original oak beams recycled from Tudor warships.
It will open from 10am-6pm Monday to Saturday, and 11am-5pm on Sundays.
