A year-long arts project that has brought a new community in York together, is showcasing its achievements at an extra care scheme in the heart of the new neighbourhood.
The 12-month DISCUS arts project has been based in an area formerly known as the “Discus project”. There, 100 prefabricated bungalows were replaced with 196 energy-efficient, mixed tenure homes by a partnership including City of York Council and York Housing Association, and which has also supported the DISCUS arts scheme.
To celebrate the culmination of this multi-media project, the council is extending an open invitation to a coffee morning on Wednesday 15 May from 10.30am to 11.30am at Auden House, a residential scheme with extra care for older people managed by York Housing Association.
Councilor Sonja Crisp, City of York Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism said: “DISCUS is part of York Stories 2012 project which encourages people to tell and share stories that are personal and unique to York. The project, based at Auden House which has its own gallery space, has been supported by City of York Council and undertaken in partnership with York Housing Association.
“Art workers have encouraged the local community to come together to learn and share new skills, to tell stories about their experiences of the area, and all to help bring together this new community, using Auden House as the focal hub.
“The exhibition is supported by the launch of the booklet York Stories 2012 At Auden House which beautifully illustrates some of the stories of Auden House’s residents and staff and is a legacy of the York 800 celebrations last year.”
Contributing to the project, Dom Smith and Colm O’Rourke became artists in residence to capture residents’ stories of York. Local artist Peter Baker ran a series of workshops for residents to personalise their own plant pots and bricks to be installed in the grounds of Auden House, and Eloise Ross, a freelance photographer, took photographs of the project in action and compiled and designed the booklet.
York Stories 2012’s time capsule will be on display at Auden House at the coffee morning and until Tuesday 21 May, when local people are invited to pop into it their thoughts, comments and stories for posterity and enjoy a coffee.
Some of the stories collected are available on the Auden House website www.yorkha.org.uk and in the York Stories 2012 archive at www.yorkstories2012.com.
