York Central MP Rachael Maskell confronted the Prime Minister today during one of the most heated Commons sessions in recent years.
The Labour MP was one of many who questioned Theresa May over her Brexit deal.
Ms Maskell asked her about Article 50, under which the UK is preparing to leave the EU on March 29 2019:
-
In the light that a no-deal would be a disaster for our nation, and in the high probability that this deal will not be passed by this House, will the Prime Minister make it her first step to extend Article 50, to ensure that we don’t fall off a cliff edge?
Mrs May gave this brief reply:
-
No, the government has made clear that we will not be extending Article 50.
‘No one voted for this’
Last night the government published its Brexit deal, and today (Thursday November 15) two Cabinet members resigned – Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab and Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey.
Rachael Maskell said: “After two years of negotiations we now have confirmation of this Government’s botched Brexit deal.
“It is a miserable failure that puts the future of our country at risk and commits us to years of division and uncertainty.
“Theresa May’s Government is in chaos due to her failure to negotiate a deal in the national interest, and I am alarmed that she is now refusing to put basic measures in place to protect the country from the fall out.
“It is clear, the Prime Minster no longer holds the confidence of Parliament or the country. Her position, and that of her Government, is untenable. I believe that urgent steps must be taken to end this chaos, and move to a General Election.”
