Its last makeover involved the star of a US soap opera.

This time there is not a celebrity in sight. But the beer garden at the Lamb & Lion in York is set for another facelift.

The owners of the High Petergate pub have applied for planning permission to update the garden. One of the city’s best, the garden adjoins the Grade I-listed city walls.

Under the plans they will take down a timber fence and extend their existing patio area, as well as installing new planters and railings.

A planting area will be created underneath the window of a neighbouring house on Precentor’s Court and on a small area of patio, to the west of the beer garden, to reduce perceived noise disturbance.

The iron railings will also be replaced with banisters featuring an ornate scroll design.

Previous refusal

A previous planning application to improve to the beer garden was refused earlier this year.

The applicants say they have made an effort to tackle concerns about the impact of the project on the city walls and neighbouring homes.

The pub and guest house is made up of two Grade II-listed buildings which are believed to have previously been a house and a shop.

Another part of the building was constructed in 1782 and was formerly the Bootham Bar Hotel.

In 2007, when it was known as Four High Petergate, the beer garden underwent given a Ground Force-style intensive team makeover in the space of ten days.

Linda Gray, who starred as Sue Ellen in US serial Dallas, officially opened the revamped garden.
