The self-proclaimed ‘daddy of fish and chips’ wants to open a takeway in the heart of York.

Papa’s Fish & Chips is set to move in to Parliament Street.

The restaurant chain already has five branches, including shops in Scarborough and Hull. Now it is planning to open its first York shop at number 24 – previously home to the Phone Tech repairs and accessories shop.

It also wants to rope off a small area of Parliament Street in front of numbers 22 and 24 for an al fresco dining space.

This “will be located outside the main pedestrian movement routes, sited under the canopies of existing trees,” according to documents submitted to City of York Council.

The takeaway will be located on the ground floor of the building, with staff facilities on the floors above.

In their application to council planners, Papa’s writes:

  • The proposal for this building is to create a fish and chips takeaway shop, with a central entrance into the unit.

A coal fired range will be located centrally across the width of the ground floor with cooking and prep areas to the rear of the range and at basement level.

This is how it will look, according to plans submitted to the council
Papa’s is a family business, with brothers Dino and George Papas two of the co-owners.

According to its website, the first Papa’s opened in Margate, Kent, in 1966. Later it moved up north, spreading its foodie philosophy of “natural, sustainably-sourced ingredients prepared with care”.

Its restaurant on Cleethorpes pier has more than 500 covers, making it the largest fish and chip shop in Britain.
