Things to do

If you have ever suffered a bad hair day, spare a thought for Louise Ndlovu.

Louise is the owner of The Lounge hair salon on Gillygate – and she had to deal with some very odd customers this week.

They included Edna Turnblad and Velma Von Tussle, the battling mums from Hairspray.

And getting stuck in too was Betty Turpin from York Dungeon.

The hair-raising shenanigans are all in a good cause though – as it helps to publicise the fact that both Grand Opera House and the York Dungeon are throwing themselves into York Pride this Saturday (June 9).

It was Grand Opera House staff members David Rennie and Rachel Alexander-Hill who dressed up as Edna Turnblad and Velma Von Tussle respectively.

Progress and equal rights

Hugely popular musical Hairspray arrives at the Opera House for a week’s run on Monday July 16.

York Pride 2018
  • Sat Jun 9
  • Parade starts at York Minster @ 11.45am
  • Fun starts on Knavesmire @ 1pm
  • More details

It is fitting for York Pride because of its inclusive message of acceptance, progress and equal rights – not to mention some belting songs.

The York Dungeon are joining the theatre on the parade as well as helping to sponsor York Pride.

Dungeon general manager Stuart Jarman said it was the second year the dungeon has taken part.

“This year in our parade section, we will be joined by Grand Opera House and local youth charity SASH as we showcase our key characters such as The Judge, Plague Doctor and Viking.”

Grand Opera House ticketing and sales manager David-James Rennie said:

We are very pleased to be supporting York Pride again this year in a number of ways to help ‘flag it up’ and show our support towards raising awareness of LGBT issues.

As part of their 2018 Wristband scheme we are selling wristbands for a fiver at our box office.
