Two York primary schools have staged their own version of the royal wedding – and they did Harry and Meghan proud.

Lakeside Primary Academy in Rawcliffe, and Appleton Roebuck Primary School, just south of the city, got into the regal spirit.

Raya and Oscar, both aged five, dressed as the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as part of Lakeside’s fashion week.

“We are all very excited at the arrival of Harry and Megan to Lakeside Fashion Week at Lakeside Primary,” said head Jenny Hadfield.

“The children have been learning about the world of fashion this term and have learned how to design, sew and even pose like supermodels!”

At Appleton Roebuck they went one step further and staged a full marriage ceremony.

It was the idea of headteacher Andrea Commins – who was also responsible for both the wedding cake and the bridal party’s flowers – when children commented that they did not know what happens at a wedding.

“We wanted to be sure that they understand what is happening during tomorrow’s royal wedding, so followed all the steps of a traditional church wedding with the school children today,” Andrea said.

The bride was Olivia Adams, seven, playing the role of Lady Olivia Appleton, and her lucky groom was Lord Roebuck, played by Ellis Sykes, eight.

The ceremony was conducted by Rev Chris Coates. And after the happy nuptials, with confetti as they left the church, a street party awaited them back across the road at the school.

“It has been a fantastic day – if Harry and Meghan have half as much fun tomorrow, it will be a wonderful occasion and a great start to their marriage,” Andrea said.
