It was a joyous place for Katie Rough – where she would play with her dogs, spot squirrels and run around in the mud.
And this weekend Katie’s family and friends returned to Acomb Wood to plant 2,000 bluebells in her memory.
Seven-year-old Katie from York was killed by a teenager last year. Now every year the wood will be carpeted with English bluebells to remind everyone of a special little girl.
“It’s a place where Katie loved to come,” said her mum Alison.
“She loved to bring the dogs, she used to see the squirrels, hide in the little treehouses… It’s just a really, really happy place.
“She would play in the mud – it’s very boggy and muddy, she loved that!”
‘It’s going to look amazing’

The bluebells are due to flower for the first time later this spring.
“It’s going to look amazing,” said Alison. “I can’t wait to come back in a couple of months and see it.
“She loved snowdrops and bluebells because daddy does that at work as well. So we thought it was a fitting idea.
“It’s another nice place where we can come and think of Katie.”
Among those helping on Saturday (March 10) were the Friends of Acomb Wood, and deputy leader of the council Andrew Waller.
