York is to get a brand new radio station.
Jorvik FM will soon be on the air after broadcasting watchdog Ofcom granted it a community radio licence.
That means Jorvik will be broadcasting across the city on FM later this year, “promoting local music, venues and playing a variety of relevant music that everyone in the city can enjoy”.
Station MD Steve Twynham said the station will “reflect the progressive, exciting and diverse cultural community it will support.
“York is a fantastic city, and we aim to be an image of the great work and play taking place here – informing residents on opportunities, to enable the city to thrive and support itself to develop.”
Cheerful and upbeat
The Jorvik team submitted their application to Ofcom last July.
With seven directors and more than 20 presenters ready to go live, the station will mix music shows and community speech programmes.
The plan is to broadcast around the clock, including some pre-recorded shows but with the emphasis on live programmes.
And they want to give a voice to the community. You can get in touch through the links in the panel.
“Through cheerful, upbeat and fresh-sounding content, mixing local guests, local current affairs and supporting local music” Jorvik would offer something different said operations director Adam Coggin.
Steve added: “The ability to reflect its activities, commerce, education, social interactions along with its niche interests and sub-cultures, is something the station relishes.”
Second FM licence
Listeners are going to be spoiled for choice as YO1 Radio has also been awarded an FM licence by Ofcom.
The station, which was launched as a digital station in September after the demise of Vale Radio, will soon extend its reach on FM.
Co-founder Chris Marsden said: “This is fantastic news and a testament to the hard work everyone at the station has put in since we went live.
“We’ve brought together a hugely talented team of presenters and this announcement means that many more of the York community will be able to hear them.”
YO1 director Carla Ballantine added: “We’re confident that our output will provide a real alternative to what’s currently available across the region.”
YO1 will be available to FM listeners “as soon as possible”.
