There’s sound evidence that volunteering brings benefits to both the person volunteering as well as the people and organisations they support.
So now Christmas is gone, why not consider volunteering at one of York’s National Trust properties as one of your New Year resolutions?
You don’t have to be an expert or a history buff and with three wonderful properties
- Treasurer’s House in the heart of York
- Goddards House and Garden opposite the Knavesmire
- and Beningbrough Hall, Gallery and Gardens in the countryside north of York
there are lots of roles that will bring you plenty of fulfilment.
Here are a few ideas for volunteering roles that might spark your interest.
Front of house
You could join a warm and welcoming admissions team to help visitors plan their day, learn more about membership or discover special events on that day.
Or be part of the shop team and help with stock merchandising, sales, raffle ticket promotion and caring for the plants.
Garden

How does the garden grow? If you love being outdoors and want to get hands-on, help the team with everything from weeding and pruning to edging and planting.
Treasurer’s House garden team has won Yorkshire in Bloom awards for the last four years.
Behind the scenes

If you’re interested in all things marketing there are opportunities to write press releases and articles, develop the website and social media, help with promotion and create posters.
Or provide much needed administrative support in the buzzing offices.
Learning
You could be part of the team that helps deliver or organise one of the school programmes or work with the Learning Officer to develop new self-led experiences.
Beningbrough Hall has a very busy schools programme, plus crafting and activity days to be part of.

Restaurant
If food and service is your passion, and you enjoy being in a busy environment, the catering teams have opportunities front of house – serving, clearing and assisting with any queues.
At Goddards, we have the welcoming tea room where the Terry family used to dine and you too could be part of a friendly team.
Conservation

Why not join the conservation volunteers who help with the vital care of the collection from cataloguing to conservation?
Room guides
One of the houses could be perfect for you if you’re interested in history, art and communicating with visitors. We have a large team of friendly room guides and visitor engagement volunteers at the three properties.
So what are you waiting for?
