The Toys R Us store in York is to close.
Just days before Christmas, the retailer revealed plans to close at least a third of its UK stores, putting up to 800 jobs at risk.
Bosses said they are working on a company voluntary agreement (CVA), which would allow it to jettison 26 loss-making stores.
And today (December 5) they confirmed that the store at Clifton Moor, York, is one of those set to go.
Open for Christmas
The writing was on the wall for the York outlet when Toys R Us submitted its restructuring plan to creditors.
Steve Knights, managing director of Toys R Us UK, said the warehouse-style stores like the one in Clifton Moor are now “too big and expensive to run”, saying that “newer, smaller, more interactive stores in the right shopping locations” were trading well.
A company spokesperson said: “It is likely that the York store will close in the spring of 2018.
“We will continue to honour gift cards and Take Time To Pay agreements and there will be no change to our returns policy.”
The retailer said that all efforts will be made to redeploy team members where possible.
Toys R Us originated in the United States, opening its first UK stores in 1985.
But the private equity-owned company has suffered falling like-for-like sales, with analysts saying it has failed to aggressively build up its online business and lost sales to competitors like Amazon.
