Finally, the sight all York sports fans wanted to see.
After innumerable delays and setbacks, work has started on creating a new arena for the city.
Diggers moved on site at Monks Cross on Monday (December 4) to begin work on York Community Stadium.
It was hailed as “great news” by Jason McGill, chairman of York City FC, which will share the ground with York City Knights when it opens.
That is due to be in the summer of 2019.
We’ve waited a long time
The complex includes an 8,000 all-seater stadium plus leisure facilities including a swimming pool, gym, dance studio, indoor and outdoor climbing facilities and a sports hall with spectator seating.
There will also be a cinema, shops and restaurants.
“We have waited a long time for this day to arrive so, naturally, I am delighted to see that work is getting underway at Monks Cross,” said Jason McGill.
“It is great news for everyone associated with York City Football Club.”
His words were echoed by council leaders, including Ann Reid, interim leisure chief.
“It is great to see workers on site so soon after we announced that all the necessary agreements were in place.”
