History, Things to do

With beautifully wrapped presents in the fireplace and luxurious trimmings winding up the spectacular staircase, it looks like the set of a particularly lavish Christmas movie.

Treasurer’s House

Minster Yard, York YO1 7JL

But this is York’s own Treasurer’s House, decked out as it would have been for an Edwardian Christmas.

The National Trust has given the house, in the shadow of York Minster, a magical makeover.

The Great Hall has gifts in its fireplace and under the tree, while the decorations twinkle under the chandelier found over the main staircase.

In the next few weeks Treasurer’s House will host Father Christmas, festive crafting and seasonal home-cooked treats.

Inspired by the opulent style of Frank Green, the last owner of the house, he period rooms of the house are decorated with garlands, wreaths and fireplace floral displays.

Little ones will love the magical trip up to the attic grotto to visit Father Christmas during December weekends, where you can listen to stories and receive a gift.

And you can make your own Christmas tree decorations to take home.

If you’ve then worked up an appetite, follow your nose of the smells that fill the house and head downstairs to the Below Stairs Café.

The new winter menu includes boeuff bourguignon in a Yorkshire pudding and the legendary Treasurer’s House Christmas pudding scone – served warm with brandy butter.
