No need to worry about the weather if you’re heading over to the Coppergate Centre any time soon.

They’ve got it covered. By no fewer than 40 bright brollies.

After the centre opened its city centre beach at the beginning of August, we’ve had little but rain.

So bosses at the Coppergate Centre, home of course to the Jorvik Viking Centre, decided on a different weather-themed installation.

Upset the gods

Making a colourful splash: the brollies at the Coppergate Centre

“After fantastic weather in July, we were very excited to have the urban beach opening for the whole of August,” said centre manager, Pippa Unwin.

“However, it seems we must have upset Freyr, the Viking god of rain, and even drawn the attention of Thor’s thunder bolts with this year’s Coppergate Strand, as we’ve barely had a dry day since it opened.

“We decided that we needed to make a suitable tribute to the weather gods to draw their favour, so throughout September, we’ll have 40 umbrellas suspended the length of Coppergate Walk.”

Coppergate’s BrollyWalk has been created in partnership with York BID.

Executive director of the BID, Andrew Lowson, said part of its remit is making the city centre attractive.

“The Coppergate team already does a fantastic job at keeping the public areas of the centre clean, with year-round floral displays, so we are delighted to be able to partner with them on Umbrella Walk,” he said.

“We hope that this could become a colourful annual addition to York’s event calendar – adding something new and exciting to a familiar space.”

You can share your images of the display on social media with the tag #BrollyWalk.

Whilst in the Coppergate Centre, visitors are invited to enjoy wonderful photographic work from York Camera Club, which undertook a year-long study of the changing colours of Coppergate.

Their work is on display at the pedestrian entrance to the Piccadilly Car Park, between Fenwick and TopShop.
