A car crashed into a house in York in the early hours of today (Sunday).
Four people were hurt in the accident in Clifton at about 1.25am.
The white VW Golf car, with three people inside, left the road on Rivelin Way and smashed through the wall and into the living room of the house on Morehall Close.
A man sitting on the sofa in the room was hit and suffered serious injuries.
The car then burst into flames, setting fire to the house.
Four in hospital
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said that the three people in the car managed to get out before it caught fire.
They were taken to hospital with head injuries. These are said to be minor.
The man who was in the living room went to hospital with “severe lower limb injuries”. Though serious, his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
Also inside the house at the time were the man’s wife and child. They were not injured.
Fire crews from Acomb, Huntington, York and Tadcaster tackled the car and house fire with two hoses, a thermal imaging camera, lighting and four breathing apparatus to tackle the incident.
Both the house and the car were severely damaged in the blaze.
Lucky no one died
A man in his 20s, believed to be the driver of the car, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Sgt Paul Cording told Minster FM: “It’s astounding that no one has lost their lives in this incident.
“And that’s down, in no uncertain terms, to the local residents, family members and emergency services who have helped get all of the people away from there.”
Sgt Cording said the impact caused a fire which has seriously damaged both the car and the house.
By 7am on Sunday (September 3) police were still at the scene.
Crash investigators are trying to find out what led to the car leaving the road and hitting the house.
The car, a white Volkswagen Golf R, is being recovered from the living room area of the house following a structural assessment of the property.
Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone who saw the car in the moments leading up to the collision as it travelled along Longwood Road/ Rivelin Way, or elsewhere in the Clifton area.
