It’s the climax of the Ebor meeting today (Saturday, August 26), with 50,000 race fans expected at Knavesmire to see one of the sport’s great spectacles, as 22 runners battle it out for the £177,412 first prize in the 3.35 feature race.

Our resident tipster Dick Turpin had a great day yesterday, with 8-1 and 3-1 winners, plus selections that made the frame at 7-1 and 14-1.

And he’s back to help you give the bookies another bashing. Over to you Dick.

Turpin writes:

There is a huge word for Star Storm in the feature Betfred Ebor Handicap (3.35), and the long-priced (at the time of writing 12-1 from 25-1) does appear to have the right stuff, after an eye-catching third at Royal Ascot last time out.

A significant improvement in the ground will also add to the clamour for James Fanshawe’s five-year-old offspring of Sea The Stars.

But is he good enough? There’s plenty to suggest he will not have things his own way, but there should be little to fear from likely market leaders Flymetothestars and Ivan Grozny. Only one favourite has won this event since 1999, which bodes badly for those two.

Turpin’s preference is for Magic Circle (currently 8-1), already a winner here this week, in Wednesday’s energy-sapping 2m Fine Equinity Handicap.

Today’s trip is two furlongs shorter, and for a horse in form, a second appearance in a week should be well within his scope.

Andover trainer Ralph Beckett should make the long trip here worthwhile, as long as there is a true pace throughout, Turpin expects to collect, and Harry Bentley’s mount should be worth a major each-way punt. Of the others, Scarlet Dragon, Dubka and Top Tug make the most appeal.

Likely favourite, Headway, in the Gimcrack Stakes (3.00) was a disappointing sixth in the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood, behind Nebo (runner-up that day). Turpin expects those places to be confirmed today, despite the strong opinion of respected observers who are choosing to ignore the Goodwood form, blaming the soft conditions.

Turpin much prefers Invincible Army, who appears to act on any going, in a race where a decent case could be made for at least five of the field of 12.

Young Newmarket trainer James Tate is proving to be one of the brightest stars in the game and Invincible Army looks a type to have significantly more improvement in him in what promises to be a very close contest.

Ulysees was a healthy 4/1 nap for Turpin in a fantastic Juddmonte showpiece yesterday, ending a long, troubled run for our highwayman tipster.

n his defence, the old rogue cites the unpredictable weather which affected the going and hampered the chances of many fancied runners.

Better weather – and firmer going – is likely today, as Knavesmire hosts the Lowther Stakes and the Darley Yorkshire Oaks on Ladies Day.

And, as all the ladies love Dick, it’s over to you Mr Turpin…

Turpin writes:

The Yorkshire Oaks (3.35) looks to be at the mercy of Enable, a fine winner of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.

The only question-mark is which of the other five runners will make the frame for the forecast. Preference is for Queen’s Trust, third here last year, and preferred, just, to Nezwaah, already a big-race winner, yet to be tested over 1m4f.

Threading and Special Purpose are expected to take the step up in class in their stride for the Lowther Stakes (2.25).

Both have strong claims; but preference is for the seriously progressive Madeline.

An impressive fifth in the Albany, and a subsequent victor over six furlongs at Newbury, Roger Varian’s filly looks made of the right stuff and rates the nap choice.

Earlier, Yorkshire’s hopes in the opener (1.55) are headed by Hey Jonesey, a course-and-distance winner last month, with a performance that looked to have some scope for improvement.

Richard Hannon’s Tangled and De Bruyne Horse, are both respected, the latter the likeliest threat, having won well in France.

Richard Fahey saddles five, yes five, in the field of 20, with Great Prospector having the strongest claims on form; but Fahey’s Darkanna, at the bottom of the weights, could represent cracking value for longshot backers.

Turpin reckons Chelsea Lad was a little unlucky in defeat here last month and looks set for a big race on his return in the Clipper Logistics Handicap (3.00).

Victory Bond was behind him then, and with the weights against him there is little to suggest those placings will be altered. Ronald R also looked a tad unlucky in the Britannia at Ascot, and represents a big threat to the selection.

Value-seekers need look no further than Quixote, a winner at Haydock in April, and cleverly lined up here by the shrewd Sheriff Hutton trainer Mick Easterby. Should go well at a big price.

Mori is likely to justify favouritism in the Galtres Stakes (4.15), and Turpin can see nothing to stand in the way of Sir Michael Stoute’s Frankel colt, only just touched off in the Ribblesdale at Ascot.

Two victories at 1m2f, suggest that the extra distance will present little difficulty. Lightly-raced Aljezeera (Frankie Dettori) looks a good forecast choice.

A cracking fillies handicap (4.50) to finish what promises to be a great day. Watch carefully for any strong moves in the market, as there are at least six with great claims.

Cristal Fizz, Lincoln Rocks, Whispered Kiss, Ghadaayer, Gheeda and Breakable all have claims; but none of the form is overwhelming.

In short, it’s one for the pinstickers! Turpin’s narrow preference is for top-weight Lincoln Rocks, twice a winner this season. The Rock Of Gibraltar filly looks well capable of giving weight all round to her rivals.

At last. It’s the Ebor meeting. Top marks to William Derby and his brilliant team at Knavesmire for producing one of the high points of the European racing calendar.

Today’s feature races, The Great Voltigeur (3.00), with £96,407 to the winner, and the Juddmonte, with an amazing £567,100 to the victor, are world-class events, rightly viewed a jewel in the crown of the sport of kings.

The mere mention of jewels is enough to gain the interest of our resident rogue, the highwayman tipster, Dick Turpin.

So what does our big Dick reckon?

Turpin writes:

Followers of David O’Meara’s Out Do in the first (1.55), successful in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot, and twice here two seasons ago, should look instead to O’Meara’s other three runners: Move In Time, Watchable and Edward Lewis.

With four to choose from, Daniel Tudhope has shunned the dual 2015 course and distance winner and subsequent Wokingham victor at Royal Ascot.

He wisely opts for the four-year-old gelding Edward Lewis, who impressed with early-season wins at Beverley and Lingfield.

But a disappointing run in the Goodwood Stewards’ Cup leaves Turpin in favour of the bang-in-form Amomentofmadness, aiming to avenge his short head defeat Goodwood defeat by El Astronaute.

In the 2.25 Acomb Stakes (7f), Dee Ex Bee is a confident choice.

Mark Johnston’s colt, (by Farhh out of Dubai Sunshine) won nicely on debut at Goodwood. He made all to win with a lot in hand and has the look of a superstar in the making.

The Dettori / Gosden combination will be all the rage in the Great Voltigeur Stakes (3.00). Frankie’s charge, Cracksman, deserves respect after an impressive third in the Derby, and a near-miss second in the Irish Derby.

But Turpin’s value selection is Sir Michael Stoute’s Mirage Dancer whose debut win last season was followed by good performances at Chester and Royal Ascot.

There is much more to come from this Frankel colt, and as long as the pace is not allowed to flag, Andrea Atzeni’s mount has an excellent chance of beating favourite Cracksman.

Only seven runners for the Juddmonte (3.35), but what a race in prospect.

Only My Dream Boat can be easily discounted (visored for the first time, after cheekpieces failed to keep his mind on the job in the King George).

Turpin’s preference is for Sir Michael Stoute’s four-year-old Galileo colt, Ulysses, who saw off Barney Roy in the Eclipse.

Barney Roy gained revenge on Churchill at Royal Ascot, and looks to have enough to hold the O’Brien three-year-old again.

The unpredictable, quantity here is Shutter Speed. The three-time winner didn’t fully recapture her form in the Prix Diane at Chantilly; but fourth place in that company is hardly a big failure – and the wide draw may have been the real decisive factor there.

With Dettori aboard, anything could happen, and John Gosden decision to tongue-tie the filly could be the missing ingredient. Will that be enough to overcome the Crowley / Stoute combination on Ulysses?

Mark Johnston saddles a pair of fancied runners in the two-mile Fine Equity Handicap (4.15). Jockey Joe Fanning has opted for top-weighted Ascot winner Oriental Fox.

But Turpin’s preference is for Johnston’s Yorkidding, a winner twice this season, who also had a bold showing in the Chester Cup.

Theydon Grey, the likely favourite, has done nothing wrong for William Haggas, and is seeking a four-timer. But this is a step up and he looks vulnerable this time, even though he’s has the benefit of near-bottom weight in the handicap.

The final race, The Betway Nursery (4.50) serves up a thrilling 20-runner sprint contest. Turpin’s money (but not much of it) will be on Frankie aboard Richard Hannon’s Etefaaq to defeat William Haggas’s Green Fortune, with dangers in the form of Tathmeen, Savalas and Zap.
