A great day yesterday, which restored faith in our highwayman tipster. Seven races, two winners, three seconds and one third, with a non-runner in the last.
Our modest investment in the Placepot paid off at better than 10/1. Not enough to retire on yet, but we have high hopes that Turpin can stand and deliver yet again on day two of the June meeting at Knavesmire…

Turpin writes:
Let’s hope yesterday marks the end of a fallow period for us punters at Knavesmire.
Today’s larger fields are going to be an even more exciting spectacle, but significantly trickier to find a winner.
My best hope relies on Spark Plug in the hugely competitive ten-runner 7f Ganton Stakes (2.55), taking on Gabrial and Mondialiste with strong claims to be made by Thikriyaat and Custom Cut too.
Narrowly beaten at Goodwood last time, Brian Meehan’s gelding needs a strong pace to show his best. He should get exactly that and is the nap selection.
The feature race (3.30) is best watched as 18 runners challenge for the £62,000 prize over six furlongs. Word from the Varian stable is that Ekhtiyaar is at his peak and should make a bold showing against several higher-rated handicappers.
But I’m saving my stake money for the 4.05 handicap over an extended mile.
My trusty spies on the North Yorkshire gallops report Mick Easterby’s eight-year-old Hanseatic in the form of his life. The Galileo gelding’s recent runner-up performance at Pontefract was ideal preparation for this 20-runner event – and the going will be much in his favour.
Tally-ho!

June is busting out all over, and so is the sporting action at York Racecourse.
The two-day June meeting culminates on Saturday with the Macmillan Charity Raceday which has raised millions of pounds over the years.
Saturday’s principal race is The Catherine Kinloch Paver Memorial Macmillan Charity Stakes, which you can read all about here.
But who will win on Friday?
After the hopes of Dick Turpin got stuck in the mud of Knavesmire last month, can our favourite tipster redeem himself for the two-day June meeting?

Turpin writes:
There is much to like about the slightly more modest fare on offer at Knavesmire today.
It’ll be a bright start as the opener (1.50) promises a tight battle between William Haggas’s smart Tulip Fever and Richard Fahey’s impressive Sosian. A Newcastle second for Sosian was eye-catching and there is much more to come.
Tulip Fever ran a little green on her racecourse debut at Nottingham, learning with every stride. But she finished well and will have come on greatly for the experience – and gets the Turpin nod.
Selling races rarely feature at York.
Traditionally one of the lower rungs of the racing game, where the winner is auctioned off after the race – though the winning owner will often buy back the victorious steed, effectively giving the racecourse a percentage of the proceeds.
But the Skf Rous Selling Stakes (2.55) is a bit different.
Today’s six-furlong contest is the most valuable seller in British racing, with £9,704 going to the winner.
The Love Doctor, placed twice in four starts, is the selection; bogged down in the Newbury mud last month, today’s effort should reveal a transformation on good to firm ground, at the main expense of Our Little Pony.
The Feathered Nest aims to get revenge in the day’s main event, the Ebf Breeders Series Fillies Handicap (4.05).
Richard Fahey’s charge was beaten by Southern Belle at Ripon last month despite a weight advantage. The same weight difference applies this time, and Turpin fully expects Southern Belle to again prove her superiority as he collects big-style on the top-weight from Robert Cowell’s Newmarket yard.
It’s worth staying for the final even on the seven-race card. The 1m3f contest could see any one of five battling it out, including Opposition, Mysterial and Panko.
Preference, though, is for Hurricane Hollow. Thirsk trainer David Barron’s seven-year-old gelding narrowly missed out over 12furlongs at Ripon last week, but showed enough to suggest that he’s ready to step up this time.
