If you thought you knew York, a new book might make you think again.
There are more than 850 pictures in York In Close Up by Catherine Sotheran – but none of them resemble typical tourist shots of the city.
Instead of grand, sweeping views of the Minster, river or streetscapes, Catherine’s camera zooms in on the details.
Things like plaques and heraldry, clocks and doorways, boundary markers and rainwater hoppers.
“I never thought I was good at doing picture-postcard type photographs, so I thought I’d do something else,” she said.
Born and bred in York, Catherine, 57, used to work as a seamstress in Sew ‘n’ Sews off Shambles. When she retired she became an active member of the York Past And Present Facebook group.
She began posting her close-up pictures of York on the site… and soon received requests for more.
After taking thousands of pictures, she has put out a collection of them in her first book, York In Close Up. And she plans to do guided walks featuring some of her finds this summer.
Meanwhile her photography continues. “I am still finding new things,” Catherine said.
