A man who urinated on a restaurant window in York has been fined as part of a clampdown on anti-social behaviour.

Callum Watson was found guilty of urinating in public, after he relieved himself against the window of The Regency restaurant on George Hudson Street on December 17 at 12.25am.

Watson, 24, of Chapelfields Road, was prosecuted by City of York Council under a bylaw designed to combat anti-social behaviour.

He failed to attend York Magistrates’ Court and was convicted in his absence.

Magistrates fined him £220, ordered him to pay £100 costs and the £30 court surcharge.

In a second similar case, Ben Lilley, 23, was also convicted of urinating in public, against the wooden gates at the rear of PopWorld premises on Micklegate at 7.40pm on December 10.

Lilley pleaded guilty by post and the magistrates fined him £150 and ordered him to pay £100 costs and the £30 court surcharge.

Housing and safer neighbourhoods councillor Sam Lisle said: “The public, businesses and our cleaning teams should not have to be faced with this kind of mess as all licensed premises have toilets.

“Thanks to our neighbourhood enforcement officers and our police colleagues for this result and I back the message that we won’t tolerate this behaviour.”

Inspector Andrew Godfrey, of York City Neighbourhood Policing Team, said:

With toilets in every licensed premises, there is simply no excuse for urinating in full public view in the city centre.

Officers are working with the council’s CCTV team to identify offenders, who should expect a summons to court, with a real possibility of a heavy fine.
