A unique York café is up for the cup.

The Countess Of York, found in a restored railway carriage at the National Railway Museum, is one of only three cafés to be shortlisted for Afternoon Tea Of The Year in the VisitEngland Awards For Excellence 2017.

It has built up a five-star reputation on TripAdvisor.

People love to indulge in an afternoon tea inside the opulent carriage. It is served three times a day, at 12pm, 2pm and 4pm.

Priced at £22.50 – or £29 with champagne – the menu includes finger sandwiches, soup, a home made scone with clotted cream and jam, buns, brulée and Yorkshire tea loaf.

Have a glass of bubbly with your buns…

Towering achievement

It is not the only York nominee in the VisitEngland Awards. Lendal Tower is shortlisted for the Self-Catering Property Of The Year.

Built as part of the city’s medieval defences, and later home to York Waterworks, Lendal Tower has been converted into luxury accommodation.

While historic features like wood panelling have been retained, other features are new – such as the stunning roof terrace.

London ceremony

Now in their 28th year, the VisitEngland award honour businesses and individuals from across England who champion excellence in customer service. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Monday, April 24 at the Hilton Waldorf, London.

Yorkshire is well represented in the nominations.

Chief executive of Welcome To Yorkshire Sir Gary Verity said: “Yorkshire is a must visit destination for many people, and much of this is down to wonderful people and businesses like these who help to make the county a world class visitor destination.”
