Nigel Worthington… welcome to York
Nigel Worthington… welcome to York

Former Northern Ireland and Norwich City boss Nigel Worthington has been named as York City’s new manager.

Two days after sacking Gary Mills following a lamentable run of results, the club’s board of directors appointed Worthington as his successor.

Nigel Worthington managed Norwich City from 2000 to 2006, guiding them to the Premier League in the 2003-2004 season. He was boss of the Northern Ireland international side from 2007 to 2011. Prior to this, he had a spell at Leicester City as caretaker manager.

After ending his successful playing career at Blackpool, the former defender and midfielder also spent two years as manager of the Seasiders from 1997 to 1999.

A York City statement said: “The decision to appoint Nigel was based on his solid Football League experience, his strong coaching ability and his extensive knowledge of players throughout the leagues.

“The York City Board of Directors welcomes Nigel Worthington to the club and looks forward to working with him.”

See below for Nigel Worthington in clips, and Twitter reaction.

Already he’s got the nickname Worthers. That’s original!

Worthington took a city with a population of 140k to the Premier League. So should be no bother to do the same with a place with 198k.

IT’S NOT GRAHAM WESTLEY! #AndThatsAllThatMatters Good luck at #ycfc Mr Worthington. The CV suggests a shrewd appointment by the McGills.
