Do you run an independent business in York – or have a favourite one?

Then this could be for you. A new map and website is aiming to drive more business to the the city’s brilliant unique businesses.

And the organisers hope it will help to alleviate the problems caused by the decision to ban A-boards in the city centre.

The York Independent Business Association, an organisation created after the floods of December 2015, will launch its Indie York map and website this spring, aiming to have 100 members.

Plans for future editions of the map, both in print an online, to include even more businesses are also in the pipeline.

Lot of interest

There has been a lot of interest from businesses in Indie York, and they expect to attract further attention with the launch of the map, said Indie York chairman Cllr Johnny Hayes.

One year on from the floods we have the start of something that could be a permanent help to York’s many independent businesses.

We believe that through bringing the city’s unique and brilliant businesses together in one place, and as one force, will help the business owners to make their mark on the visitors that come to the city as well as those who live here.

The York BID (Business Improvement District) funded the pilot map and website, and Make It York have offered to distribute the maps. Pilot versions were launched in Bedern Hall in November.

Johnny added: “Indie York is also about giving our independent business owners a voice, and making sure that they are heard among all the noise in the city.

“It’s about coming together to tell people where to find their businesses and welcoming visitors to York.

“Once the first publication is launched in spring we are hopeful that this will help direct people to these businesses and help to compensate for the recent loss of A-boards.”
