City of York Council is looking to recruit volunteers to support its programme of Health Walks and Guided Rides. The volunteers will lead or assist with the growing number of group walks and cycle rides which take place regularly across the city each week.
Volunteer Walk Leaders are required to support the successful York Health Walks scheme, which is part of the national Walking for Health programme. The walks attract a wide range of participants who enjoy the regular outdoor exercise. Walking is at a gentle pace, suitable for most abilities and ages.
Councillor Sonja Crisp, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism said: “This is a great opportunity to help people enjoy the outdoors and to show people more of this beautiful city. If you enjoy walking or cycling in York and would like to help others to get out and about, socialise and live a healthy lifestyle then this could be the opportunity for you!
“Regular short walks start from 12 different locations in York and offer friendly and sociable walking groups led by volunteers. Alongside supporting a very worthwhile programme volunteers will be able to stay active and meet new people themselves.”
“We have a fantastic team of volunteers who make such a difference to the lives of the people who regularly attend the health walks and rides around the city. The fresh legs we’re recruiting will help support these fun and enthusiastic groups through the spring and summer months.”
Volunteer Ride Supporters help to lead guided cycle rides around the city throughout spring, summer and autumn. These rides are particularly targeted at people who are new to cycling or have not cycled for a number of years. They make use of the cycle paths and quiet, traffic-free roads wherever possible and provide a safe and sociable environment in which to get cycling.
Full training and support is provided for both roles, and the commitment required from volunteers is flexible and can be tailored to an individual’s availability.
The next volunteer training day for ride supporters will be taking place on Wednesday, February 27, and for walk leaders on Friday, March 15. For further information please contact Sarah Prescott, Active Living Officer at City of York Council on (01904) 553377 or email [email protected].
