Lord Mayor’s first ever Shine Award winners announced

The awards ceremony for the first ever Lord Mayor’s Shine Awards, has been held at the Mansion House, York for 12 local young people.

The Shine Awards were launched last year as a way of rewarding young people in the city who were making a difference in their communities and inspiring positive engagement amongst their peers.

The awards were open to children aged between 5-14.

The winners are:

  • Daniel Saywell (arts) who helped with running art exhibitions
  • Ellie Boyes (arts) for producing films aimed at young people
  • Alicia Hall and Naomi Jennings (play) who designed the York 800 Play logo
  • Chantelle Holroyd (play) who encouraged play activities at local club Door 84
  • Ben Robinson (Sport) who organised an after school table tennis club
  • Ellen Jennings and Bethany Johnson (sport) who act as sport ambassadors
  • Ruth Hindle (Libraries) who gives up her time to act as a library monitor and also runs a book club
  • Berfin Altin (libraries) who actively encourages others to explore books
  • Huw Croxen-John (parks and the environment) who acts as an advocate for young people
  • Ashley Egan (parks and the environment) who set up a community growing space outside her home.

The Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Keith Hyman, said: “I was honoured to present the awards to these young people who have each shown hard work and commitment to helping their community.”

Cllr Janet Looker, Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Young People, said: “These awards highlight the great talent we have in the young people in York and the strong spirit of volunteering. Each winner has gone above and beyond the call to contribute towards creating a better city for young people.”
