Issued by City of York Council
A resource pack has been put together for teachers and youth leaders to assist schools, clubs and societies help children and young people to gain an understanding of the Holocaust.
The pack was created by Stacy Macfarlane, a City of York Council volunteer who is also volunteering for Khaoz Media, and contains a wealth of material that can be drawn on to help schools and other groups reflect on the theme of Holocaust Memorial Day.
Cllr Sonja Crisp, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: This valuable tool is packed with creative ideas to get both primary school and secondary school pupils learning about, and relating to, the Holocaust.
Revolving around this years theme of Communities Together: Build a Bridge, the pack includes supporting facts and figures and links to other helpful websites, forming a useful guide to teaching about this sensitive subject.
Stacy Macfarlane said: I hope this pack will help schools, teachers and pupils gain a better understanding of the events surrounding the Holocaust and that similar aspects of it still exist today almost seventy years on.
By educating people about the importance of treating all groups in society fairly and in a civilised manner, we can stop or at least try and prevent future acts occurring. We all want to live in a safe society and by working together, this can happen.
In 2013 the work to engage children and young people with Holocaust Memorial Day is being partly delivered through an education programme sponsored by the York Standing Council on Religious Education (SACRE).
York SACRE has offered a bursary for seven schools (primary and secondary) to book a free half-day activity and drama-based workshop for up to 30 pupils.
The teachers resource pack is available to download from www.yorkfestivals.com/holocaust-memorial-day.
