Top work from The Lungs and Young Thugs Records, bringing the York duo’s Julianna Buttermaker to a wider audience with not one, not two, but three videos.
The first video is out now via Facebook, here:
with two more to come over the next two weeks.
The EP gets a major launch at a York location which was kept secret until a day or two ago, and now revealed to be the New York Club, Blossom Street, tonight (Friday October 21) at 8pm.
The suggested ticket donation is a couple of quid and for that you get a full band set from The Lungs, whisperings of special guest support, beautiful EPs on sale and cheap bar. As they say, “It’s everything a Friday night needs.”
The Lungs are Theo Mason Wood and Bonnie Milnes.
Deathly dark rockabilly
Tireless promoter and newly-wed Dan Oliver Gott is also a YorkMix contributor. So he probably won’t feel able to say here just how great his new Snakerattlers set-up is.
But we can! The two-piece outfit are Dan on guitar and vocals with wife Naomi Westerman on percussion. You might recall Naomi as the beating bass heart of Dan’s band, The Franceens.
Dan tells his Facebook friends: “This band was born as a way for Naomi to learn drums, but it has taken a much more serious twist, as we have both realised that we love its music and we want to share it with the world.”
Which is great news for the rest of us. Their short but sweet set at their pre-wedding debut show at Fulford Arms earlier this month was a powerhouse display of what Snakerattlers describe as ‘deathly dark rockabilly’.
But that’s only part of the story. Seven months of rehearsals and song-writing have revealed Naomi to be much more than a mere Meg to Dan’s Jack White.
This was at times as raw as the Meteors, as polished as the Stray Cats, and as powerful a slice of punk-infused energy as one could hope for – and some well-crafted song-writing underneath the glorious noise which one audience member alongside me said was reminiscent of a Sixties wall-of-sound production by Joe Meek.
It really did have all those diverse flavours.
In the video above they are in mellow mood on All My Love, which was all I could shoot before my battery died. So much more to come from this pair. Don’t miss them next time.
Achin’ At The Prospect
The launch gig featured three great supports: the outrageously talented King Courgette, York’s own string band from Clifton’s delta country; Newcastle’s punk veterans, The Exes, still cranking it out like they mean it, man; and, just ahead of his mini-European tour, York’s own Dadaist spoken-word performance genius Mark Wynn with his unclassifiable mixture of humour, ranting, personal memoir, searingly honest story-telling and guerrilla karaoke, which would be a great title for an album.
As it is, he’s called the new release (complete with self-penned magazine) Achin’ At The Prospect, which you can get here
UFO kidnap shock
Have aliens landed in York?
You might be forgiven for thinking so after checking out techno artists DJ Wizard And Floyd‘s latest outing.
The track is Down My Spine, classic hi-energy, verging on trance.
And if the music isn’t dizzying enough then the tongue-in-cheek video will finish the job, as it catches the boys, Mark Bramwell and Charlie Floyd, flying round the city in a POV flight simulator game before being beamed aboard a flying saucer somewhere near Millennium Bridge.
No, we’re not kidding. Loads of fun. Judge for yourselves here…
