After the intense and sometimes anxious excitement of the Ebor and Juddmonte, the one-day Press Family Raceday is the perfect antidote.
It’s the most relaxed meeting of the year, very much a day for York folks, but still promises top-notch racing.
Paddington Bear is due to make an appearance, and there will be fairground rides and face-painting.
But how can the grown-ups make a little pocket money for themselves? Over to our tipster Dick Turpin…
Turpin writes:
For some trainers and horses it’s a chance to make amends for lacklustre performances earlier in the season and to prove that faith in them has been justified.
Maybe they tackled the wrong distance – or ran their race at the wrong pace or – as always in racing – they just didn’t get it quite right last time. The season’s learning can be put to good use today.
An excellent example of this comes with Turpin’s tip in the last race (5.10), Midnight Whistler. Much was expected of this offspring of Henry The Navigator, but the gelding did not set the world on fire last season.
In February, there was a welcome win when favourite at Lingfield, and punters were expecting to see much more over the summer. But the delayed return suggested something was not quite right.
Now, after a 211-day absence, the stable believes the answer has been found. First time cheekpieces should keep his mind on the job and make a mockery of his current rating.
Tom Marquand’s mount is the pick, hopefully at a great price.
In the feature event, the Garrowby Stakes (3.10), look no further than Danzeno. The Appleby gelding is clear top-rated and goes on any ground, and we are ignoring his last unplaced run.
Lord Of The Land looks good for the forecast.
