Everyone was a winner as the York 10K saw thousands of runners take to the streets.

Huge sums were raised for countless charities at the event, as the runners were cheered around the city.

Among the runners were a Minion, Spiderman, Wonder Woman and Ronnie Rhino.

The event, which forms part of the legacy of inspirational fundraiser Jane Tomlinson, started and finished in Knaversmire Road, close to York Racecourse, and took in some of York’s famous landmarks including the Minster and Clifford’s Tower.

BBC favourite Harry Gration waved the staring flag, with his Radio York colleague Elly Fiorentini and Sky Sports reporter Bryn Law also taking part.

Asda Foundation manager Julie Ward said:

Congratulations to everyone, including the many Asda colleagues, who supported today’s Asda Foundation York 10K and made it such a success.

“The event very much demonstrated the friendliness and fun that is a super feature of the Asda Foundation series and, of course, a great deal of money was raised for some great causes.

Loud cheers were reserved for the hundreds of big-hearted youngsters aged between three and 14 taking part in the free-to-enter Arena Group York Mini and Junior runs.

The run was started by brave Max Fielding, from Ilkley, who suffers from a rare genetic condition. He and his dad Roger took part in the 1.5km event to support Martin House Children’s Hospice, where Max receives care.

Roger said: “The cheer Max received at the start was just brilliant. He loved every minute.”

Runners took part for a good cause of their own choice or one of the partner charities which this year are: Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Martin House Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support, St Leonard’s Hospice, Candlelighters, Brain Tumour Research and Support, Mind York and York Against Cancer.

Many of the youngsters taking part in the Mini and Junior Runs were raising money for the official children’s charity, York-based Jessie’s Fund, established in memory of a musical child who died aged nine, which helps seriously ill or disabled children to be heard through the language of music.

Entries are open now for the 2017 York 10K – or runners can step up the distance with the Yorkshire 10 Mile in October 2016. For more details, go to the Run For All website.
