The petition to stop the home office accommodating 15 hundred asylum seekers at the old RAF base north of York has reached a significant milestone
Five thousand people have put their signatures on it electronically so far.
The Government announced that RAF Linton on Ouse would become an Asylum Reception Centre.
It would hold a minimum of 1500 single adult males who have travelled to the UK from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Libya, & Afghanistan.
The plan has been opposed by the local MP and district council as well as most villagers and people who live in the surrounding area to the north of York.
Things appear to be on hold at the moment. It’s not clear what will happen when the Consevative leadership question is settled and we know who the new PM is.
Linton Action Campaigner Olga Matthias talked to YorkMix Radio.
“We are over the moon with five thousand signatures but every which way you turn there is a different story coming from the Homes Office.
“Decisions have been made, decisions haven’t been made. We are told people will come then we are told they are not ready to come.
One thing, she says, they do know is work has stopped for now but they also know some jobs have been filled already. Olga Matthias says that is not saving money as the Government said it wanted to do if they are sitting around doing nothing
Five thousand protest signatures on the petition are very welcome but for now Linton-On-Ouse remains in limbo.
