Marks and Spencer officially launched their freshly updated foodhall in York today – with a special guest and giveaways.
The renewal of the ground floor of the Pavement store features a sleek new look and features new fresh produce sections a new wine shop and more.
For launch day (31 March) the M&S icon Percy Pig was in attendance, dancing and taking selfies with customers.
With a DJ playing music, the M&S team were giving out golden tickets to the first people who come through the store – where lucky customers could win freebies including a top prize of £200 voucher.
“We’ve made a significant investment in terms of the look and feel of the foodhall,” said store manager, Luke Smith. “We’ve got a brand new fresh bakery and we’ve heavily invested in fresh produce – that’s anchored at the front of the shop.
“We’ve got a bigger and better flower shop, a gifting destination for our customers. Our customers can see improved service offers, a click and collect proposition.”
There is also a brand new M&S wine shop. “We’ve got dedicated colleagues to support our customers on selecting beers, wines and spirits.”
Around the shop are vinyl designs of iconic York locations such as the Minster and the Jorvik Viking centre.
“This is a local shop,” said Luke. “We are very proud to be in York and we are very grateful for our loyal customer base that support us either daily or weekly.”
The York store is currently in its 116th year, and it first opened in 1907.

“Luckily, we’ve managed to recover well from Covid,” said Luke, “and that’s been a slow process, but I can’t thank our customers enough for supporting us because without them, we wouldn’t have been able to invest the money that we’ve been able to be able to do.
“I’m exceptionally proud of all of our teams that have gone over and above to deliver this for our customers.
“To have this significant investment in York city centre, for me feels a great privilege to be part of. I think we’ve delivered a great result for our customers.”
M&S York on Pavement is open seven days a week. Visit the store from 8am-7pm Monday to Saturday, and 11am-5pm on Sundays (Browsing available on Sundays from 10:30am).
