Step into spring as York’s hidden gem Goddards reopens for the new season.
The National Trust venue on Tadcaster Road reopens today (Saturday 1 March), and we took a visit to the beautiful gardens this week to take a look at what’s in store for spring.
This season, discover the revamped rock garden area bursting with blooming snowdrops and crocuses, and get ready for stunning displays of hyacinths, hellebores, pulmonarias and daffodils.
Hidden away on the edge of York Racecourse, Goddards was once home to the famous Terry chocolatier family.
“We’ve done quite a bit of work down in the rock garden, we’ve planted some new bulbs down there,” explained senior gardener Tom Longridge. “So hopefully people who know the garden will see the difference and enjoy the new spring bulbs that we’ve got there.

“Goddards has quite a magical quality of peace and tranquillity. It’s genuinely a lovely place to come and relax. You’ll see lots of wonderful plants, you’ll get a nice, warm welcome from the team, and you can enjoy a coffee and a cake on the terrace.
“It’s bigger than most people expect – it’s five acres.
“I’m really ready to have visitors back and to share the garden with everyone, and for hopefully them to enjoy it.”
The gardens and café kiosk will be open again to the public from Saturday 1 March at weekends only, although opening is extended during the summer months.
Entry is free for National Trust members and under-fives, with charges applying to other visitors.
