A legendary York sports bar has opened in its new home today (Friday).
The Terrace is now open at its new location of 13-17 New Street.
The sports pub was previously on Fossgate but closed in June after their lease wasn’t renewed by The Stonegate Group, who took the venue back to manage themselves and opened it as The Stonebow.
But owner Paul Gardner was determined that The Terrace would rise again. “The name The Terrace belonged to me,” he told YorkMix.
The venue on New Street was formerly an All Bar One, and was owned by hospitality group Mitchell & Butlers.
“It’s been in the pipeline for about nine months,” Paul explained. “We had discussions with Mitchell & Butlers who are selling off a lot of their All Bar One sites.
“This one was due to have its lease renewed in about 18 months’ time, so we just said that we could possibly take it off them now.”
The inside of the Terrace has been transformed with 11 screens, the biggest one being 100 inches. The screens are able to accommodate different types of sports at the same time, with some being linked together, and can show four different things at once.
The reaction to the popular pub reopening has been “very positive.”
“We have a lot of regulars that are usually an older crowd,” said Paul. “They seem to have missed us. People have been very, very nice when they’ve been putting messages across to us.”
As well as live sports, the Terrace will be continuing to serve home cooked food. This will include grills, steaks, burgers, fish and chips, hot dogs, sandwiches, and more. There will also be breakfast options available until 12pm.
On draft the Terrace will have Morretti, Carling, Strongbow, John Smith’s, to name a few.
“We’ve taken a couple of crafts with Brixton Brewery too,” said Paul. “We’re unable to do any cask because of the position of the cellar being upstairs so we’ve tried to compensate for that.”
The Terrace will also offer the Scottish lager Tennent’s, which Paul says makes them the “first in the country to have Tennent’s.”
The pub is also planning on introducing live music on Saturday nights.
The Terrace has 150 covers.
It has retained most of its staff from the Fossgate site, but it has also created seven to eight jobs on top of that.
The opening times are Monday to Friday, 11am-11pm, Saturday 11am-12am, and Sunday, 11am-10:30pm.
