Experience Oscar Wilde’s masterpiece of mistaken identity – as a brand-new production of The Importance of Being Earnest comes to York this week.
The production – produced, directed, and performed by a cast of local actors – will be a faithful adaptation of Wilde’s beloved comedy, and will feature specially recorded music and handmade 1890s costumes.
The Importance of Being Earnest is at Theatre@41, Monkgate, from Wednesday 1 to Saturday 4 May 2024.
First performed in 1895, The Importance of Being Earnest is a satirical comedy which pokes fun at the absurdity of Victorian upper-class society. The dialogue contains some of Oscar Wilde’s most famous one-liners, including the immortal exclamation: “A handbag?”
Director Christopher Leslie said: “Earnest is a play everyone has heard of but has not necessarily seen. It is such a delightfully witty and farcical play – and we have a superb and stellar cast on our hands. Everyone has been working extremely hard.”
Pop Yer Clogs Theatre, a local theatre company, first formed in March last year with the aim of staging classic plays at accessible prices.
In addition to staging Earnest, Pop Yer Clogs Theatre are currently rehearsing for an abridged performance of Alice In Wonderland at York Theatre Royal on Thursday 16 May as part of the venue’s TakeOver festival. They will return to Theatre@41 with a full-length production of Alice in November.
Tickets for The Importance of Being Earnest are £10 and are available via the Theatre@41 website.
