Shopaholics, your wait is almost over.
Madly popular global retailer Primark has set a date for the opening of its huge new store at Monks Cross, York.
Drumroll please… It will open its doors for the first time on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 10am.
The fashion group revealed the date via posters on the store and a countdown clock on its Monks Cross page. Here’s our own version:
This has been one of York’s most anticipated shop openings since work began on the store back in March 2015.
Primark has taken over the units which once housed Marks and Spencer, Sports Direct and Laura Ashley. Expanding the shopping space with the addition of mezzanine floors, the megastore will boast 57,600 sq ft of retail space – far bigger than the already pretty impressive 34,400 sq ft store planned for the Coppergate branch in the city centre.
York firm Simpson have been on site fitting out the interior of the store since December.

Like to make a fuss
Primark likes to make a big deal of its store openings, as this video of the launch of the branch in Cologne, Germany, makes clear.
Even the retailer acknowledges it can get a bit bonkers:
The craziness that follows when the staff count down the last 10 seconds to opening has to be seen to be believed. Customers – many of whom will have travelled long distances and queued to get in – storm the store grabbing everything they can find. It’s electric!
New range, new jobs
Bargain hunters will be able to choose from mens and womenswear, children’s clothes, homeware and gifts.
The store will also be promoting its range of summer clothing, launched this week.

But if you’d rather have a new job than a new pair of beach shorts, you might also be in luck. Primark says the new store will create 222 new jobs.
While many vacancies have been filled there are still some up for grabs on the website. But be quick as there is a deadline for applications on many of them of Tuesday, April 12.
There is still no word as to when the city centre Primark, at the Coppergate Centre, will open.
