Another body has been recovered from a river in York.

The man’s body was recovered from the river at 3am this morning (Saturday, 20 April). He had entered the water after running off from police.

Officers were alerted by CCTV to suspicious activity around King’s Staith at about 1.20am.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said:

  • Police officers were dispatched to the scene, but on police arrival a man ran off from the officers and entered the River Ouse a short time later.

A search was carried out involving York Rescue Boat and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and the man was recovered from the river just after 3am.

Ambulance staff provided medical assistance, but despite their efforts he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Police cordoned off King’s Staith and an area near Skeldergate Bridge as they undertook the search and rescue. The cordons have since been lifted.

Police probe

The spokeswoman said the death has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct – standard practice when someone dies after contact with police.

She said: “We are not yet in a position to confirm the man’s name, however he is believed to be aged in his 20s and from the Merseyside area.”

His body is the fourth to be recovered from York’s rivers in the last two weeks.

The body of missing York man Lee Evennett was recovered from the River Foss on April 6.

A woman in her 70s was discovered in the River Ouse on last Friday (12 April), and 19-year-old Sonny Ferry died after falling into the Ouse last weekend.

The recent spate of deaths has led to calls for a river safety campaign in York.
