York is about to get its first kids hair salon.
Star Street Salon is being created in the former Lister Electricals on Poppleton Road by businesswoman Dawn Murphy. It is aimed at children from babies to teens – and their parents.
“Our aim is to take the stress out of hair appointments,” Dawn told YorkMix. “We want children and adults to look forward to visiting Star Street.
“There will be fun, bespoke chairs, funky mirrors and eye catching décor. Individual iPads and toys will be located at each station to keep them occupied throughout the appointment.”
Dawn has two children aged four and seven, and came up with the idea after searching for child friendly hairdressers in the York area.
“Many hairdressers have appointments for children, but their presence of children can be somewhat of an annoyance to other clientele who have come for a bit of ‘me time’.
“It is difficult to keep children entertained in salons and children often become bored in these environments.
“Having researched other locations around the country and around the world, I realised there was a gap in the market in York and this type of venue would be very well received.”
Dawn, who worked for a York solicitors for eight years, then retrained and became a personal trainer and sports masseuse, said they were planning to open in November.
They are completely gutting the inside of the shop, opening up the space into one large room. “We have enlisted the services of the amazing EPH Studios at Thorp Arch to design and install the interior to replicate a real street with shop fronts, street signs and a road running through the centre,” she said.
Star Street Salon will offer haircuts and styling for all ages of children.

Dawn said: “Our aim is to make Star Street the go to venue for baby’s first haircut.
“Manicures and pedicures will also be available and children’s hair, bath and nail products will be available for sale.
“We will also be offering haircuts and nail treatments to adults, who can have an appointment alongside their child.”
All treatments will be bookable online.
The salon is now recruiting. They are looking for several part-time and full-time “confident and self-motivated Level 3 hairdressers and Level 3 barbers “who must absolutely love children and want to have fun at work!”
Hours can be flexible to suit. Salary will be subject to experience. To apply, email your CV to Dawn at [email protected].
