At a time when many people are looking for a special place to eat, either for a Mother’s Day treat or Easter family get-together, a new guide to some of Britain’s top restaurants has been published.

The UK’s top 50 restaurants for brunch and Sunday lunch has been compiled by OpenTable – and York has a representative on the list.

The guide is based on 1.2 million reviews written by OpenTable diners in the past year.

Ate O’Clock on High Ousegate

Flying the flag for our city is Ate O’Clock, the restaurant on High Ousegate. As well as a la carte and set menus, the 114-seat restaurant offers a Sunday roast for £15.95.

It has nearly 3,000 reviews on OpenTable with an average of 4.5 for food and 4.6 for service.

Typical reviews include:

  • The restaurant was very busy, but this was not detrimental to the service or food quality. Excellent food, great service, I would definitely recommend Ate O’Clock to anyone
  • Absolute cracking evening. Food was amazing, friendly staff and great atmosphere. Would definitely recommend
  • Sunday lunch is amazing here, if we’re in York we always come here
  • We had a Sunday dinner which was lovely. Service was good from the young lady staff

Ate O’Clock recently expanded into the former Joy clothing store next door, turning it into Social8, serving food and cocktails.

It is not the only North Yorkshire venue to make the top 50. Also included are the Starling Independent Bar Cafe Kitchen in Harrogate, and Muse in Yarm.

As OpenTable said, there’s something here for everyone looking for “the perfect place to spoil your Mum”.
