Work to expand an Aldi in York is set to begin in the coming months following the approval of a planning application.

Plans from the supermarket chain approved by York Council are set to see the front of its Fulford Road store extended.

An Aldi spokesperson said it would keep customers informed as works progress on the extension which will “significantly enhance their shopping experience”.

It comes after the plans were approved on Tuesday following their submission in December.

The expansion is set to see the store’s shopping area increase from 854sqm to 1,146sqm, with the overall footprint expanding from 1,265sqm to 1,557sqm.

The number of parking spaces is set to fall from 107 to 92 in order to accommodate the larger store.

Plans stated the current size of the store meant customer experience was compromised, with circulation space particularly at its entrance limited.

The expansion is set to see aisles widened and new chillers installed as part of improvements to the store’s layout, along with cosmetic upgrades.

It will also bring the size of the Fulford Road site into line with typical Aldi stores which range from 1,200sqm to 1,400sqm.

Plans stated it would help to support Aldi’s business model which sees it carry mostly own-brand products bought in a weekly shop across sites to increase efficiencies, keeping prices low.

They stated: “This extension is needed due to the significant growth of popularity of Aldi over the past few years meaning that some stores, including the Fulford Road store, over-trading.”

Aldi’s spokesperson said the expansion would create ten new jobs in addition to the 30 staff currently employed at Fulford Road.

The spokesperson said: “We are pleased that York council has approved plans for an extension at our Fulford Road store.

“We’re currently finalising details ahead of beginning construction in the coming months and will make sure customers are kept up to date as work on the extension moves forward.”
