Repair work on the sinkhole in York city centre will begin on Tuesday.

As YorkMix reported yesterday, the hole has opened on St Leonard’s Place, outside York Theatre Royal.

Temporary traffic lights were put in place at 6am today. These have now been removed for the Bank Holiday weekend.

A City of York Council spokesperson said: “Thank you to York’s residents, visitors, businesses and bus operators for your patience while we investigate the cause of the void on St Leonard’s Place.

“Having completed an inspection we have undertaken essential safety work and for now, taken out the temporary traffic lights.

“This will mean that over the busy bank holiday weekend (when we also have the Queen Street closure at the railway station), two-way traffic can flow on St Leonard’s Place until next week when we will begin repair work.

Bus stop changes

Map: City of York Council
  • Southbound buses using the stops outside York Theatre Royal:  Service 1 (towards Chapelfields), 5/5A (towards Acomb), 6 (towards University of York), 30 and 40 (towards York College), will continue to use a temporary stop at the taxi rank by Bootham Bar, which will be sign posted. The taxi rank will remain suspended.
  • Northbound towards Bootham, Service 1 (towards Wigginton) will use stop ED, at the shelter next to Exhibition Square. Services 5/5A (towards Strensall) and 6 (towards Clifton Moor) will use a temporary stop on Museum St, on the same side of the road as stop EA (for Rawcliffe Bar P&R).

“This work will require further lane closures and temporary lights from Tuesday 27 May.

“Starting on Tuesday our teams will begin to repair the underground damage and road surface.

“These works may take around two weeks. We will be updating residents with travel information for Tuesday onwards as soon as possible.”

Pedestrian access to St Leonard’s Place is unaffected.
