York residents can grab a Green Deal in 2013

28 Jan 2013 @ 11.50 am  Press Release

Issued by City of York Council

From this week York residents could benefit from even more incentives and energy saving deals to help them make improvements to their homes.

Last December City of York Council launched a pilot scheme called Warmer Homes York, which was designed to help the city to prepare for the government’s forthcoming flagship energy efficiency initiative – the Green Deal.

The Green Deal launches this week and will provide energy efficiency and other works at no up-front cost to the householder across all tenures and businesses.

To launch this scheme, homeowners will be offered a Green Deal cashback scheme through the government, which is on a first-come, first served offer. Householders who take up a Green Deal will be able to claim back cash at no up-front cost on energy saving improvements they install through the package.

This cashback package could be worth over £1,000. For example, if residents installed flat roof insulation in their home as part of a Green Deal package they could qualify for £390 cashback, which is a limited offer while funds last.

The types of measures available through the Green Deal to residents include loft and cavity wall insulation, solid wall insulation, flat roof insulation, boiler replacements, glazing improvements and door replacements.

Once complete, homeowners can then pay for the ‘Green Deal’ works by monthly instatements through their electric bills.

Most improvements should, over time, reduce heating bills because homeowners are using less electricity, gas or oil – but the actual savings will depend on homeowners’ energy use and the future cost of energy.

Residents can also still take advantage of the city’s Wrapping up York scheme, until the end of this month, and the Warmer Homes solid wall insulation programme until March 2013. Anyone interested should contact the Yorkshire Energy Partnership to have their loft insulation topped up, or their cavity walls filled with insulation for free.

Cllr Dave Merrett, cabinet member for Transport, Planning and Sustainability, at City of York Council, said: “Since the launch of Warmer Homes York and Wrapping up York over 500 residents have saved over 10,000 life time tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) helping us to tackle fuel poverty, create healthier warmer homes, and address the worrying Climate change challenge.

“Through these schemes,we are now undertaking work to maximize the opportunities of the Green Deal across York, albeit we believe the gvernment needs to improve the incentives on take up further.”

York residents can claim their FREE loft and cavity insulation by calling Yorkshire Energy Partnership on 01904 55 44 06 quoting Wrapping up York.
