York Police and the Safer York Partnership are hosting free property registration events as part of a week-long, national campaign targeting burglary and stolen goods.
Safer York Partnership and North Yorkshire Police have purchased new equipment called Hermes and Apollo which gives officers, volunteers and partners the ability to register property directly to the Immobilise National Property Register.
It also allows officers to scan recovered items and interrogate the National Mobile Property Register to identify if those items have been stolen.
Councillor Linsay Cunningham-Cross, Cabinet Member for Crime and Stronger Communities, said: “Safer York Partnership is keen to utilise innovative technology to deliver more effective and efficient responses to tackling crime.
“By using equipment like Hermes and Apollo, we are able to provide crime prevention advice at the same time as registering property onto the national database”
Safer Neighbourhood Commander for York, Superintendent Phil Cain, added: “Often the police recover items during searches or by other means, and it’s not always clear if those goods are stolen. By using the Immobilise register, they can find out instantly.
This not only saves officer time, but helps progress investigations and means the rightful owner gets their belongings back.
“These events also offer members of the public an opportunity to meet their local police and community safety partners to get valuable crime prevention advice.”
