Police have arrested five people in York so far this month in a crackdown on street drinkers, drug taking and anti-social behaviour.
They have also seen empty properties boarded up and moved street furniture to prevent a return of the problem.
Sgt Toby Gorwood, part of the York city centre neighbourhood policing team, said: “Since 1 August, and in response specifically to issues with street drinkers in York city centre, we have arrested two people for breach of court orders, a third person for recall to prison, a fourth person for public order and spitting at a officer and a fifth person for three breaches of a criminal behaviour order.
“We have worked with partners to target problem areas using dispersal powers, with landlords to board up empty properties encouraging the problem and to move street furniture to prevent loitering relating to drug and alcohol antisocial behaviour.
“These efforts will continue to improve the quality of life for everyone living, working, visiting the city centre and will include the use of ancillary powers at our disposal with joint efforts to tackle the problem with council neighbourhood enforcement officers.”
He urged anyone experiencing anti-social behaviour to ring 101, report online via the North Yorkshire Police website – or dial 999 if urgent.
