Family-owned York opticians Rae & Rae has been shortlisted in two categories in prestigious national awards.
The National Opticians Awards is organised by respected industry publication Optician Magazine to recognise and reward excellence in optics.
Rae & Rae on Bishopthorpe Road, fronted by mother-daughter duo Tracey and Georgia Rae, is up for Fashion Practice of the Year, while the business’s Lesley Collins has achieved personal recognition in the Dispensing Optician of the Year category.
The double, which comes with the practice only having opened its doors last December, is more impressive given Optician reported “a record number of entries” this year.
In the Fashion Practice of the Year category the judges were looking for a business that sources unique eyewear and displays ‘trend leadership’, something which optometrist Georgia is extremely passionate about.
“We’re a small store so can’t stock loads of brands,” she said. “Each of our ranges must earn a place in our store.
“Alongside a couple of big names, we strive to stock smaller, independent brands, championing British eyewear and brands with strong eco-credentials.”
On the last point, Georgia explains that Rae & Rae have worked hard to secure exclusivity with several leading sustainable brands, carving out a niche in the area as a stockist of environmentally friendly eyewear.
Some of the brands offer glasses in “a fantastic range of sustainable material” for eco-conscious customers, including wood and hemp.
Commenting on Lesley’s personal achievement, Georgia said: “It’s more than just a job, it’s something she loves. Lesley makes choosing new glasses fun and enjoyable. It’s a privilege to watch her work, and to see the smiles on the faces of our patients at the end.”
