mix-six-logo-rightHappy Christmas. Yes, it’s rolled around to that magical time of year when we express our feelings towards one another through material gifting.

There’s no shortage of shops selling lovely stuff in York. But what, where and how much? We have trawled round many of the city’s shops in search of more individual gifts that keep your loved ones smiling, even after the sixth brandy has been poured.

Ladies first. These are the presents for daughters and nieces; friends, girlfriends and blurry things in between.

Paper Doll hoodie

The new Paper Doll boutique on Back Swinegate is the brainchild of Nicola Scott, who set up its sister shop Bunty & Co in (unexpectedly trendy) Pocklington in 2006. Packed with fun slogan tees from her own label as well as high end lines such as Maison Scotch. We particularly rate her cute hoodies with irreverent phrasing, shown below with a Maison Scotch leather jacket. Hoodies cost from £28.

The Collection Box- Decorative Letters

The Collection Box is a great pick for quirky home ware gifts. These cute, decorative letters will add a personal touch to any girls bedroom. They also might aid this country’s falling literacy levels, maybe. Letters cost £7 each and are available in letters A-Z, in case you cruelly named your child Xena, or something of that ilk.

Sweater Shop-Novelty Jumper

Eighties staple The Sweater Shop has re-launched in York, and just in time for Christmas they have jumped on the novelty jumper bandwagon with a range of christmassy kitsch designs. After careful deliberation their penguin jumper was voted most covetable. Penguin jumper £29

Browns: Benefit Brow-zing Eyebrow Palette

This was the year to have eyebrows bushier than a Christmas tree. Blame fickle fashion, but McDonalds-style arches are out and slugs are in. So define those full brows with this palette from Browns, priced at £23.50.

Mulberry Outlet Shop

For a truly decadent present, the Mulberry Outlet Shop has some winter (relative) bargains. Whilst the prices may still lie around the price of a deposit on a house, you can expect to pay at least £200 less than regular retail price on their handbags. We also spied a range of stocking filler key rings. Prices start from around £50.

Wild At Heart Mug

It’s fantastic when inanimate objects sum up your life. This mug from Wild Hart works on two levels. For the giver it can be a rallying cry to get out of bed and not waste the gift of youth. For the recipient it’s a cool way of describing their oh so wild life. All self-respecting middle class households should have at least one of these slogan mugs. Mugs cost from £12.
