A fundraising campaign has been launched to save a charity described as a ‘lifeline’ for many in York in surrounding areas, as it faces the brink of collapse.

Move the Masses, founded in York in 2018, was established to make walking a reality for vulnerable people. It has now grown to serve communities in Selby, Leeds, Pocklington and Durham too.

The charity aims to improve wellbeing through movement, access to nature, and building social connections.

They run a walking buddy project, Move Mates, which pairs volunteers with individuals who struggle to leave their homes, enabling them to enjoy regular walks and company.

Despite the team of staff and board of trustees putting their all into securing funding, the charity revealed that it is in a critical financial position.

The charity said on social media: “We are devastated to announce that Move the Masses is at risk.

“We have worked very hard over the past few months to prevent this from happening.

“It is with deep sadness that we have no choice but to face this reality.

“Our committed team and trustees are passionate about the charity, what it represents and the outcomes it achieves.

“So we will continue to fight for the charity’s survival until the last second.”

To help keep its vital services running, the charity has launched a fundraising appeal, aiming to raise £50,000. So far, £590 has been raised from 23 generous donors.

Move the Masses currently supports over 300 people thanks to a community of over 200 Volunteer Move Mates. Their work was also recognised last year with the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service.

They said: “Our volunteers give people the confidence and moral support to leave their homes and go for a walk, improving their physical and mental health outcomes, reducing isolation and ultimately making people feel happier.”

The staff are now “working tirelessly” to explore every possible option, but are relying on the public for survival.

Move the Masses works in partnership with various local organisations who refer clients to the service. These include occupational therapists in the NHS and social prescribers.

One social prescriber from York shared their thoughts: “I have referred many patients to Move Mates over the years which has been a godsend to so many.

“Without Move Mates, some patients would be stuck at home day in, day out watching television without seeing anyone else.

“The regular walks and company offered by Move the Masses is invaluable to many people’s mental health and wellbeing.

“They support so many to access exercise and companionship which positively impacts mental and physical wellbeing.

“There is no other organisation that would be able to replace Move Mates, and should it close, many would suffer as a result.”

One Pocklington woman supported by the service spoke on her personal experience:

“Having someone to walk with has made a big difference. I have become more confident, and I enjoy getting outside and spending time in the fresh air. It is also really nice to have another person to matter to, who cares about me and how I’m doing.”
