It will come as no surprise to YorkMix readers, who voted it into our ‘best York breakfasts’ guide last year.
But now the rest of Britain knows that the Pig & Pastry is one of the finest places to start your day.
The Bishopthorpe Road café was York’s only entry in The 50 best breakfast places in the UK as chosen by the Guardian.
Its readers were urged to venture outside the city walls to find the Pig & Pastry, although they were warned that customers are often queuing out the door.
The Guardian wrote:
What to order: Brindisa chorizo and scrambled eggs on sourdough toast (£6).
Naturally the family-run café was chuffed to bits.
National acclaim
It’s not the first time Team Pig have earned national acclaim.
Opened by Julia and Steve Holding in 2008, the Pig & Pastry has regularly featured in foodie recommendations. The Guardian previously said it would “take a bullet for one of their milkshakes”.
Buzzfeed rhapsodised over their sausage rolls and named their bacon butty as one of 17 Sandwiches You Must Eat Before You Die.
And The Times named it as one of the top 25 places to eat weekend brunch in Britain.
