Nanook of the North: Silent Film with live score by Frame Ensemble
79 minutes, certificate U

In the vast Canadian Arctic, under endless sky and in conditions of unimaginable cold, live Nanook and his family.

Although it usually features any list of the greatest film documentaries, in fact Nanook of the North (1922) is a mix of recorded reality and staged drama, depicting the everyday struggle of the Inuit people to stay alive in the northern reaches of Arctic Quebec.

Flaherty’s profound empathy with his subjects animates every frame of the film, from scenes of peaceful domesticity to the drama of the seal hunt and the meticulous detail in which he shoots the construction of an igloo.

Frame Ensemble is a quartet of improvising musicians specialising in creating spontaneous soundtracks for silent film.
