Mozart’s magical opera sung in English with orchestra
Mozart’s last great operatic work, The Magic Flute [Die Zauberflöte] was first performed barely a month before the composer’s death in 1791 at the age of 35.
It is a wonderful combination of outstanding, grand operatic arias and delightfully tuneful lighter songs, all linked by spoken dialogue and set against a background in which the power of light and enlightenment overcomes the darkness of night and superstition.
The story follows Prince Tamino and his quest to rescue his beloved Pamina from the grasp of her mother, the evil Queen of Night, and return with her to the world of light presided over by Sarastro, the High Priest of Isis and Osiris.
By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Libretto by Emanuel Schickaneder. English translation by Edward J Dent. Performed by York Opera
