Summer Walking Tour – An Introduction to Medieval York

Discover Medieval York through the city’s archaeology…

Our guided walking tours will take you around sites that are key to understanding the layout and character of the Micklegate area in the later Middle Ages.
Follow part of an important processional route for religious festivals and royal visitors, as well as taking in points associated with York’s annual Mystery Plays, communities of monks and friars, and archaeological sites that can tell us more about the day-to-day activities of the men, women and children who lived here more than 500 years ago.
Tickets include admission to Micklegate Bar, where several medieval small finds will be on display. Pre-booking is essential.

As most of this event is outdoors and elements of the walk include steps and uneven surfaces, please wear sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing appropriate to the weather on the day. Unfortunately due to the nature of the city walls, this event is not accessible to wheelchair users. There are unguarded drops on some sections of the wall. All participants are asked to wear face coverings when inside Micklegate Bar and to maintain social distancing at all times. Numbers will be strictly limited.
