Caught on dashcam, a van driver hurtles along the wrong side of the road near York tip – nearly colliding with a vehicle coming in the other direction.
The driver then gets out and angrily confronts the driver of the other vehicle.
This video shows the dangers that have been created on James Street by people queuing to visit the Hazel Court recycling centre. So says the man who filmed it all.
He was on his way to work at 8.30am on Monday when this ugly confrontation happened.
The driver, who does not want to be named, told YorkMix: “I was making my way to work where I was faced with an oncoming van clearly on the wrong side of the road – with intent to drive around the pedestrian crossing on the opposite side of the road.
“I stopped and he got out of his van very aggressively stormed over shouting abuse and hit the driver side window.
“I wish the council could have done something about this earlier to prevent this happening.
“This was only minor, I was a little shaken up and thankful I locked my door in case he had hit me. However this could of been a lot worse resulting in a nasty accident.”
He has reported the incident to police.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said that enquiries are continuing.
Better traffic management
The queuing traffic waiting to use Hazel Court has caused a lot of concern in recent weeks.
City of York Council has recently urged people only to go to the tip “if necessary”.
The driver who filmed this confrontation thinks more should be done.
These are his suggestions:
- staff greeting / traffic management on the junction to ensure traffic is flowing as quickly and safely as possible
- a temporary traffic management system including temporary lights, lanes and more signage
- the booking system that was in operation in the first lockdown
- a system that would allow paying trade vehicles to “jump the queue” – after all they are paying and doing their day to day job, they shouldn’t have to spend so much time waiting when they could be earning on more jobs.
